Best of Netflix in December: your Xmas binge list

Netflix is our favorite way to enjoy movies, TV and documentaries on our various devices. However, it can be hard to keep track of all the cool content coming and going every month. What are the new arrivals and which ones deserve your precious viewing time? In this monthly list, we’ll answer these questions with our best tips for Netflix.

Netflix: best shows and movies coming in December 2018

Christmas is almost upon us and naturally, the long journeys to our family homes and the long couch sessions that follow all the feasting are best helped with some quality TV and movies. While it’s not possible to do a comprehensive analysis of all the new shows and movies coming to Netflix this month, we’ve presented a few special recommendations below, excluding the leaked Black Mirror episode, since it’s sadly not yet official.

Shaun of the Dead

It’s a romantic comedy. With zombies. A “RomZomCom”, if you will. The eponymous Shaun is a British deadbeat who’s dumped by his girlfriend Liz, but he’s determined to win her back. Unfortunately, this effort is complicated by an unexpected occurrence – the zombie apocalypse. But Shaun won’t let that stop him. He enlists the help of his best friend to rescue his girlfriend, her family and friends and get them all to the safety of the local pub. At times hilarious, scary, and emotionally touching, Shaun of the Dead‘s got something for all the family.

The Big Lebowski

This classic ’90s comedy from the Coen brothers still holds up for quality viewing nowadays. LA slacker Jeff ‘The Dude’ Lebowski has his life turned upside down after a case of mistaken identity has him mixed up with a local millionaire of the same name. A quest for compensation for a ruined rug leads us on a convoluted but hilarious journey along with missing wives, Very Serious bowling competitions, German techno-nihilists and White Russians.

The Lobster

An offbeat, arty film that plays out as a kind of romantic sci-fi fairy tale, The Lobster is set in a world where single people are given 45 days to find a romantic partner before they are forcibly turned into an animal of their choice. Protagonist David has just been dumped by his wife and is struggling to find a new partner while his time runs down. Eventually, he decides to buck the system and attempts to escape – joining up with a rebel faction of fellow loners, who reject the notion of romance entirely. Unfortunately, once there, he starts developing feelings for a mysterious stranger. Yes, The Lobster is weird, but if you can get on board with that, it’s a rewarding and thought-provoking reflection on relationships.

Available: December 2

Blue Planet II: Season 1

British national treasure David Attenborough returns to the deep blue oceans of the world in this sequel to the acclaimed marine nature documentary series. With entrancing footage of rare and unusual creatures of the deep, Blue Planet 2 consistently evokes wonder and excitement – examining the lives of marine animals both gentle and fierce, beautiful and bizarre.

Available: December 3

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: A Midwinter’s Tale

I loved bringing the campy/creepy Chilling Adventures of Sabrina back in October, so our teenage witch is a welcome guest for the holidays. This Christmas sees Sabrina and the Greendale cast of the witching world and her mortal friends tangle with séances, spellcasting and…what looks like Santa, but not like how we know him.
