GENEVA — BMW will expand its i family of electrified cars with the i4 full-electric sedan.

The i4 will be one of 12 battery-electric models BMW aims to have in showrooms by 2025. Currently the BMW brand’s sole battery-powered model is the i3 city hatchback. The i subrand’s only other model is the i8 plug-in hybrid sports car.

Krueger did not give a date for the introduction of the i4, which will be a production version of the i Vision Dynamics concept unveiled at the Frankfurt auto show in September.

Asked whether i4 would come after the iNEXT that BMW has said it will launch in 2021 as its “innovation flagbearer,” Krueger said: “We will see.”

The i4 will be produced at the BMW’s factory in Munich where it builds 3- and 4-series models, Krueger said at the auto show here earlier this month.

BMW Group plans to launch 25 electrified models across its brands by 2025. Nearly half of these  will be fully electric and powered by fifth-generation battery and drivetrain technology.

A new electric Mini will launch next year, followed in 2020 by a full-electric BMW X3. These will be followed in 2021 by the iNEXT.

Starting in 2021 the automaker’s EVs will be capable of offering an all-electric range of up to 700 km (435 miles) and its plug-in hybrids will have an electrical range of up to 100 km (62 miles), BMW said.

BMW has secured naming rights for the badges i1 to i9 and iX1 to iX9 as it seeks to benefit from the industry shift toward battery-powered cars.
