Spacious spaceships: Chevy dealers now offering 1,000-hp Tahoes, Suburbans

The Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban are great at hauling people, cargo, and trailers, all at the same time. Specialty Vehicle Engineering has announced that certain Chevy dealerships will offer its modified Tahoe and Suburban models to do that work much faster. That’s because these SUVs have 1,000 horsepower.

The Drive first reported on the wild upgrades SVE has in store for the massive people movers last Friday. At the heart of the upgrades is an LT1 V-8 engine as found in the Chevrolet Camaro and Corvette. However, SVE strokes the engine from 6.2 to 6.8 liters, and slaps on a supercharger for good measure. Of note, the 1,000-hp package is only available for Tahoe and Suburban models ordered with rear-wheel drive that originally housed the 5.3-liter V-8.

For those who want four-wheel drive capability, a Stage I package offers nearly all the benefits, but the same 6.8-liter supercharged V-8 engine makes “only” 810 hp. Stage I kits include a forged steel crankshaft and aluminum pistons, CNC-ported LT1 heads, a custom supercharger, headers, and an optional heavy-duty transmission. The Stage II kit adds an upgraded fuel system, CNC-ported heads from an LT4 V-8 engine (via the Corvette Z06), a 20 percent larger supercharger with 25 percent more boost, and a larger throttle body.

The heavy-duty transmission is standard with the Stage II package.

SVE also offers a handful of cosmetic additions, such as various wheels, badging inside and out, and even a sport suspension that lowers the vehicle for an even more sinister look.

Before any of the cosmetic goodies, the base Stage II package will set buyers back $ 66,995 atop the price of a standard Tahoe or Suburban. For those who don’t need four-figure horsepower, it’ll cost $ 44,995 for the Stage I package. All of the upgrades come with a 3-year/36,000-mile warranty, aside from the transmission. That receives its own separate 12-month/12,000-mile warranty.

The SUVs will be in good hands for the upgrades. SVE is the same company that continues to crank out modern-day Yenko Camaros and a handful of other Yenko-branded vehicles from Chevrolet.
