Tiny iPhone and iPad charger will surprise you with its power [Review]

336

Aukey has a USB-C charger that’s about as small at the standard 5W iPhone charger but boasts 18W of power. It can quickly charge an Apple phone or tablet, as well as other devices.

In addition, Aukey makes a USB-A dual-port charger that’s also surprisingly small but puts out 12W.

We tested both these products so you can be sure you’re getting your money’s worth.

Aukey 18W Power Delivery Wall Charger review

Aukey‘s recently-released 18W charger is just 2.4 cubic inches, plus the prongs fold down to make this accessory even more portable. It fits easily into any gear bag or purse.

It feels about the same size as the 5W charger that Apple ships with every iPhone. So you could switch to Aukey’s without extra hassle.

The situation is even better for those with a 2018 iPad Pro. The 18W charger for this tablet isn’t very portable. It’s not as huge as a MacBook charger, but it’s still clunky and the prongs don’t fold down, making it seem larger. Aukey’s 18W Power Delivery Wall Charger is noticeably smaller.

This accessory is a basic black, with a plastic casing in rounded corners. Aside from the color, the overall design is reminiscent of an Apple charger.

Performance

In our testing, the Aukey 18W Power Delivery Wall Charger was able to give the latest 12.9-inch iPad Pro a 10 percent charge in 20 minutes.

For comparison, the 18W charger that comes with this tablet provides the same boost to the battery in that same amount of time.

Aukey’s 18W charger was able to give our test iPhone XS Max a 30 percent charge in 20 minutes. Compare that to the 9 percent charge the 5W Apple charger provided in the same time.

Please note that fast charging a recent iPhone model with a USB-C charger like Aukey’s requires a USB-C-to-Lightning cable, such as the one Anker recently introduced.

Aukey 24W Dual Port Wall Charger review

Aukey also recently launched a very portable charger for people who still prefer USB-A. This has two ports, each of which can provide 12W of power. That’s a definite improvement over any Apple charger.

The shape is oddly wide so that this accessory can’t share a wall socket with anything else. Still, its plugs fold down to make this item fit easily in a purse of bag. It comes only in basic white.

Performance

In our tests, the Aukey 24W Dual Port Wall Charger was able to give our iPhone XS Max a 23 percent charge in 20 minutes.

Remember that Apple’s 5W charger brings just a 9 percent increase in that same length of time.

Many iPad models come with a 12W USB-A charger. For comparison, we connected our iPhone XS Max to one of these for 20 minutes, resulting in a 25 percent charge, just a smidge more than Aukey’s power adapter.

Final thoughts

It’s convenient to have a second charger for your iPhone and iPad, especially if you travel frequently. These two power adapters from Aukey are good options for people on the go.

This company’s 18W Power Delivery Wall Charger is more portable than the one that that comes with the 2018 iPad Pro with no decrease in power. And iPhone users will see a significant increase in charging speed with this charger if they’re willing to invest in the appropriate cable.

Aukey’s 24W Dual Port Wall Charger will also increase iPhone charging speed, just not as much. And the extra port is a definite bonus.

The 18W Power Delivery Wall Charger from Aukey is $ 21.99. You can get Apple’s 18W iPad charger for $ 19. We feel the extra portability justifies the slightly higher cost.

The 24W Dual Port Wall Charger is $ 24.99. For comparison, Apple’s 5W version is $ 19.99. Again, the advantages of the Aukey version justify the additional cost.
