Knowing how much you love to yell at your TV, Amazon has launched a new accessory that can be paired with the Fire TV and Echo smart speaker to enable greater control over your TV when using voice commands.
Called the “Fire TV Blaster,” the device is already available for pre-order for $ 34.99 and acts as a standalone IR blaster that facilitates wireless infrared communicate between an Echo smart speaker and a Fire TV streaming device. Once set up, you can speak to Alexa through Echo and input commands on the Fire TV, including hands-free controls for power, volume, playback, and switching between input devices.
This type of functionality might ring a bell for folks who own a Fire TV Cube since that device already has an IR blaster built in and thus doesn’t require this new standalone blaster unless you want control over devices that aren’t currently in line of sight of your Fire TV Cube. In which case, Amazon says the Fire TV Cube is compatible with the Fire TV Blaster.
However, the new standalone IR blaster is more appropriately paired with the Fire TV Stick, Fire TV Stick 4K, or third-gen Fire TV, as well as any Echo smart speaker or smart display. It’s ideal for someone who doesn’t already have a TV or entertainment system that can be controlled by Alexa.
If you don’t have any of those devices, Amazon happens to have a deal that will get you everything you need in a discounted bundle. The company is offering its new Fire TV Blaster, Fire TV Stick 4K, and Echo Dot for $ 79.99—quite a bit less than if you purchased everything together separately for $ 119.97.
